Interview with Bob Doetzer, President of Circuit Technology Training Inc., Bob Doetzer, President of Circuit
Technology Training Inc., and a key figure at the IPC Center in Maryland, a leading training facility for soldering
and manufacturing techniques in the United States.

Soldering in North America
How would you describe a
typical training session ⁄day?
“Our training sessions range from 1-5 days
depending on the course and are very interactive
with the students. All five trainers previously
worked in manufacturing so the have valuable
real world experience. They relate the content
to the students specific challenges to maximize
the benefits and give them real world solutions
that they can implement right away.”
Which are the highlights in your
training infrastructure there?
“We were thrown a major curve ball with COVID
and companies wouldn’t send people to training
centers. So we had to adapt and take the
training center to our customers. We developed
“road kits” with all the soldering, inspection
and ancillary tools and equipment for the
training in custom pelican cases. This required
a significant investment as we have 6 complete
road kits. We still have 8 training centers in
Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina,
Florida, Michigan, California and in Mexico but
most of our training is on site at the customers
now. Usually we use Weller’s WD, WX, WHA and
WXR series that allow us to handle all soldering
and rework challenges for circuit boards, wires,
terminals, cable assemblies etc. In total, we have
approximately 150 Weller stations to handle any
challenge anywhere in the world.”
What are the main benefits of
your IPC Training?
“The main benefit of our training is definitely the
ROI. For example, we did an IPC-7711/7721 rework
and repair training to a customer who had a
huge “bone pile” of defective boards. After their
training, they were able to repair most of those
boards and recover approximately $90K worth
of boards.
