Valentin
Bosch
From CAD to model making: 3D Printing meets electronics
In his basement workshop, equipped with state-of-the-art 3D
printing technology, Valentin also relies on the WE1010 from
Weller when building his model cars and campers – combined
with the ZeroSmog Shield to protect his health in the long run.
From screen to reality
In Valentin Bosch’s workshop, the hum of a 3D printer
fills the air, while a CAD program glows on the
computer screen. Spools of filament, trays of resin, and
shelves of printed parts surround the workspace. For
him, every project starts digitally: he designs the parts
in CAD, prints them in PLA or resin, and then assembles
them. Once the physical components are ready, his
attention shifts to adding electronics – LEDs, motors,
or microcontrollers – to make the models come alive.
Creating movement, light, and sound
For Valentin Bosch, the true magic of model making
lies in interactivity. He recently built a tram diorama
where the vehicle not only moves but also lights up,
creating an atmosphere of realism. Without soldering,
it would just be a static display. With it, the model
becomes a small world that feels alive for him. He
experiments freely, knowing that if something doesn’t
fit or work, he can redesign it and print a new version
within hours.
Soldering in the electronic age
Valentin Bosch’s modern Weller’s WE1010 soldering
station is a key tool for him. Thanks to the ability to set
the exact temperature and swap tips quickly, he can
adapt to different tasks in seconds. He uses a fine
conical tip for SMD components and then switches to
a chisel tip for thicker wires. Constant tip cleaning with
a brass sponge and generous flux application are
essential parts of his workflow.
Shared principles across generations
Although Valentin Bosch’s process is rooted in modern
technology, he shares the same values as traditional
craftsmen like Helmut Schmid: precision, patience, the
right tools – and above all, passion. Whether it’s a
hand-formed brass railing or a 3D-printed lantern, the
goal is the same: to create something that tells a
story. He also believes in the exchange of knowledge
between generations.
